ThirtyC Reveals 55m ION Superyacht Concept with Nuclear Energy Option

-

British design studio ThirtyC has introduced a new 55-metre superyacht concept called ION. The reveal comes ahead of the Superyacht Design Festival in Kitzbühel, Austria, where the project is being presented by the studio’s creative director, Rob Armstrong.

ION features a bold silhouette defined by a strong vertical bow and clean, architectural lines. The design projects a sense of modern strength while prioritising efficiency and seaworthiness. A metallic grey finish reinforces the yacht’s contemporary and purposeful appearance.

Architectural approach to design

ThirtyC conceived ION as an architectural object rather than a traditional yacht. The profile focuses on proportion and clarity instead of decorative excess. According to the studio, this approach improves both visual impact and performance at sea.

“We wanted to create presence through proportion,” said Armstrong. “The vertical bow, the clarity of the profile and the aft saloon layout all support that idea.”

Duplex-style aft saloon

A standout feature of the concept is the duplex-style aft saloon. This space spans two levels and redefines the relationship between the interior and the surrounding environment. Expansive glazing floods the area with natural light and creates an open, flowing living space with strong sea connections.

The layout aims to enhance onboard comfort while offering flexible areas for relaxation and social use.

Interior concept and accommodation

While full interior details remain undisclosed, ThirtyC describes the styling as contemporary and refined. The design prioritises space, light and comfort. Panoramic lounges and adaptable leisure spaces support both extended private cruising and high-end charter use.

The yacht’s generous volumes allow for versatile accommodation layouts, tailored to owner preferences.

Nuclear propulsion option

ION also explores alternative propulsion technology. The concept includes the option to install the Unity nuclear power solution developed by NOxFree. The system allows the yacht to operate without greenhouse gas emissions and without the need for refuelling during long-range voyages.

ThirtyC says the solution improves operational efficiency while maintaining high safety standards.

“The NOxFree Unity Module enables emission-free operation with no refuelling,” said Lydia Moss of NOxFree. “It represents a significant step toward a cleaner and more autonomous future for yachts over 40 metres.”

With its combination of bold design and experimental propulsion technology, ION presents a forward-looking vision for the next generation of large yachts.
