Lateral Naval Architects Introduces 89m Outlier Concept Redefining the 2,000GT Superyacht Class

-

British studio Lateral Naval Architects has unveiled Outlier, an 89-metre concept that redefines the 2,000GT superyacht platform with the “features and feel of a 5,000GT vessel”. The project marks the third generation of Lateral’s Ultra-Efficient Hull series, pushing boundaries in design freedom, efficiency, and comfort.

Traditionally, yachts in this category face constraints: double-height engine rooms, limited tender and beach club layouts, and noise in forward living areas. Outlier challenges this standard by delivering a 16% increase in length within the 85-metre loadline, a 20% reduction in power demand, and 17% lower fuel consumption.

The breakthrough lies in a forward engine room powered by Lateral’s Electric Hybrid system, which eliminates the need for oversized technical spaces and allows for a seamless lower deck. This design unlocks greater interior flow, relocating guest spaces to quieter amidships areas while freeing up exterior volumes – a 40% increase in outdoor living space compared to typical yachts of its size.

To demonstrate the potential of this platform, Lateral partnered with Foster + Partners on Outlier I, an 88.5-metre concept showcasing triple-height interior spaces, vast glass façades, and expansive exterior decks. The design encourages spatial connectivity, creating better interactions between guests and crew while ensuring privacy and comfort.

Performance-wise, Outlier delivers versatility with a Boost Mode top speed of 17.5 knots, a “Guest Sustained” cruising speed of 15.5 knots, and a 5,500-nautical-mile range at 11.5 knots.

“Outlier is more than a platform; it’s an invitation to rethink a yacht from the inside out,” said Ollie Cooper, senior naval architect at Lateral. “It enables designers and owners to imagine spaces differently and explore new possibilities.”

Unveiled at the Monaco Yacht Show, Outlier reinforces Lateral’s position at the forefront of superyacht innovation, showing how efficiency, sustainability, and creative freedom can be woven into the next generation of yachts.
