In a landmark moment for sustainable superyachting, Feadship’s 118.8-metre Breakthrough has become the first superyacht ever to be bunkered with liquid hydrogen in the Netherlands. The operation took place in the Port of Amsterdam, marking a critical step forward in zero-emission maritime innovation.

As the world’s first fuel-cell powered superyacht, Breakthrough’s bunkering required not only cutting-edge technology but also close collaboration with port authorities. The Port of Amsterdam played a key role by offering safety oversight and drawing on prior experience with alternative fuels such as liquefied methane and gaseous hydrogen.
“We are proud that the first bunkering with liquid hydrogen has now taken place in our port,” said Milembe Mateyo, Director of CNB and State Harbour Master of the North Sea Canal. “This is an important step toward more sustainable shipping and our goal to facilitate the use of sustainable fuels as a Multi Fuel Port.”
The hydrogen was delivered via truck and stored aboard Breakthrough at cryogenic temperatures below -253°C. Her 3.2mW fuel cell system then converts the hydrogen into electricity via a non-combustive chemical reaction, powering hotel operations and coastal navigation completely emission-free—with only water as a by-product.
Beyond her revolutionary green propulsion, Breakthrough stands out as the largest motor yacht ever built in the Netherlands, surpassing her near-twin Launchpad by nearly 30% in volume. Designed inside and out by British studio RWD, she offers a serene, townhouse-style layout spread over four decks.

Highlights include a semi-submerged Neptune lounge, an 8.2-metre contraflow pool, cinema, library, dedicated hospital suite, and versatile guest accommodations for up to 30 guests in 12 cabins. Intimate social spaces such as a coffee corner and games niche reflect a yacht built for both exploration and home-like comfort.
Listed with Edmiston shortly after her 2024 launch, Breakthrough is not just a vessel—she’s a bold statement on the future of yachting: clean, conscious, and cutting-edge.
