The world’s first fossil-fuel-free sailing yacht, the 69-metre Project Zero, has been unveiled by Dutch shipyard Vitters, marking a major milestone in the future of sustainable superyachting.
After seven years of development, the groundbreaking yacht has emerged from the yard’s construction hall in Zwartsluis, the Netherlands, and is now preparing for her official launch before heading to sea trials.
Developed by Vripack, Dykstra Naval Architects, and Foundation Zero, Project Zero has been designed to operate entirely on renewable energy, harvesting power from wind, solar and hydro-generation without relying on fossil fuels.
Among her most innovative features are 100 square metres of photovoltaic thermal (PVT) solar panels, regenerative turbine propellers that generate electricity while sailing, and a 700-volt DC electrical system capable of powering both propulsion systems and onboard amenities.
The yacht has also been engineered for exceptional efficiency, with hull optimisation supported by Emirates Team New Zealand, delivering improved sailing performance while increasing onboard energy generation.
Inside, Project Zero combines cutting-edge technology with natural materials and sustainable craftsmanship, featuring reclaimed wood, leathered stone, innovative recycled finishes and flexible living spaces designed around comfort and functionality.
In an industry-first initiative, the project’s technical knowledge and engineering solutions will be shared openly through FoundationZero.org, allowing designers, engineers and shipyards worldwide to access the technologies and accelerate the transition towards cleaner yachting.
With her launch now imminent, Project Zero represents one of the most ambitious sustainability projects ever undertaken in the superyacht industry and could redefine the future of environmentally responsible luxury sailing.
