German shipyard Lürssen has officially delivered the 109-metre explorer yacht O3, formerly known as Project Shackleton, marking the completion of one of the industry’s most anticipated and secretive new-build projects.
Originally sold in 2018 and later resold during construction in 2022, O3 underwent significant design modifications, including a length extension and the addition of a large dedicated helideck. Following her departure from Lürssen’s Hamburg facilities, the yacht briefly stopped in Norway before continuing her maiden voyage along the Danish coast.
Designed for long-range exploration, O3 features an ice-class hull, substantial cargo-carrying capabilities, a helicopter hangar, and advanced diesel-electric propulsion. Built in steel and aluminium, the yacht offers an impressive volume of 6,561GT and accommodation for up to 20 guests.
The project was initially designed by Norwegian studio Salt Ship Design, while industry sources suggest that Espen Øino International and Cristina Gherardi Design contributed to later design developments.
With her delivery now complete, O3 joins the ranks of the world’s largest explorer yachts and further strengthens Lürssen’s reputation for delivering some of the most technically advanced and ambitious vessels ever built.
The delivery comes during a busy period for Lürssen, which currently has multiple large-scale projects under construction, including several of the largest superyachts in development worldwide.
