As the 30th anniversary edition of The Superyacht Cup Palma Richard Mille gets underway, all eyes will be on one of the most anticipated duels of the regatta: the head-to-head battle between the magnificent J Class yachts Rainbow and Svea.
Following several days of training on the Bay of Palma, the two iconic yachts finally lined up against each other during practice racing, offering a glimpse of what promises to be a spectacular contest. With Mallorca’s famous sea breezes forecast throughout the event, spectators can expect world-class racing between two of the most beautiful sailing yachts ever built.
For Rainbow, the regatta marks an exciting new chapter under the ownership of Peter Harrison, CEO of Richard Mille EMEA. Although the team is still getting familiar with the yacht, early practice sessions demonstrated that Rainbow is already closely matched with Svea, one of the most successful J Class yachts of recent years.
The racing format will feature four windward-leeward races and a final coastal race, placing equal emphasis on boat speed, tactical decisions and flawless manoeuvres. With such finely balanced competition, even the smallest mistake could prove decisive.
Rainbow’s crew includes an impressive line-up of sailing talent from Harrison’s successful Jolt Sailing Team, led by America’s Cup winner Ed Baird as tactician. Speaking ahead of the regatta, Baird highlighted the unique appeal of the J Class:
“Anytime the J Class boats can get out and sail together, everybody wins. These boats are extraordinary pieces of sailing history, and seeing them racing on the water is something truly special.”
Meanwhile, Svea, guided by experienced tactician Tony Rey, arrives in Palma with a proven track record, having secured victories at previous editions of The Superyacht Cup and establishing itself as one of the benchmark yachts in the fleet.
Adding further excitement to the event, the presence of Hanuman, now under new Italian ownership and docked nearby, has fuelled talk of a growing renaissance for the legendary J Class fleet.
With racing scheduled from 25 to 27 June and conditions expected to be near perfect, the stage is set for an unforgettable chapter in J Class history and a fitting celebration of three decades of The Superyacht Cup Palma Richard Mille.
