Ibiza JoySail 2026: A Dramatic Opening as Storms Hold the Fleet Ashore

293

The opening day of Ibiza JoySail 2026 was postponed on Thursday as an approaching weather front brought storms and strong winds to Ibiza and Formentera.

With an orange weather alert issued by the Balearic Government, the Ibiza JoySail Race Committee and organisers closely monitored conditions before deciding to keep the fleet in harbour, prioritising the safety of the crews and yachts.

Instead of racing, teams gathered at the event tent, using the unexpected break to catch up, discuss tactics and prepare for the days ahead.

“Unfortunately, we have to take the weather as it comes and safety is the priority. Getting a fleet of 20 boats out of the harbour, and then returned safely if conditions worsen, just can’t be guaranteed so we don’t take the risk. We look to tomorrow with high hopes and enthusiasm!”

The 2026 fleet comprises 19 yachts ranging from 80 to 147 feet, bringing together an impressive selection of sailing yachts for this year’s edition.

Racing is currently scheduled to begin at 12:00 on Friday, although the final decision remains dependent on weather developments, with further storms expected during the early morning.

The Race Committee and organisers continue to monitor the forecast closely, with crews hoping to finally get out on the water and begin the racing programme.
