Europe’s Largest Research Vessel Built in Romania – Monitoring the Danube from Germany to the Black Sea

-

Built in less than two years at the Giurgiu Shipyard, Romania has launched Europe’s largest river research vessel, a state-of-the-art ship designed to monitor and study the Danube River along its entire course — from its source in Germany to its mouth in the Black Sea.

Developed through the collaboration of a team of Romanian professors, researchers, and engineers, the vessel is equipped with advanced scientific instruments capable of measuring water quality, biodiversity, sediment composition, and pollution levels. It will play a crucial role in protecting one of Europe’s most vital ecosystems and supporting sustainable management of the Danube Basin.

The ship represents a milestone for Romanian shipbuilding and European environmental research alike — a powerful example of innovation serving science and sustainability.
