A highly secretive conversion project has come to light in Germany, as the 87.9-metre vessel L Symphony has been photographed for the first time following her transformation from an offshore supply ship into a private expedition yacht.

The vessel has been undergoing a 19-month conversion at the Stahlbau-Nord facility in Bremerhaven, with the project led by Lloyd Werft. Recent images show the yacht positioned on a heavy-lift pontoon, preparing to depart the yard as the next phase of outfitting approaches.
From Offshore Utility to Expedition Luxury
Originally built in Indonesia at the ASL Shipyard as a commercial offshore supply vessel, L Symphony was designed for the oil and gas sector, featuring a robust structure, high bow and open working deck suited for long-distance transoceanic operations.
Following her transformation, the yacht now presents a dramatically different profile, including a new cream-coloured hull replacing the original industrial finish.
A Radical Structural Transformation
The conversion has introduced significant architectural changes. Most notably, four additional decks have been constructed forward, fundamentally altering the vessel’s proportions and creating the volume required for superyacht living.
At the stern, the addition of what appears to be a helideck further reinforces the yacht’s expedition capabilities, suggesting a platform designed for remote cruising and exploration.
While the design team behind the project remains undisclosed, the scale of the modifications indicates a comprehensive rebuild rather than a simple refit.
Toward a New Generation of Expedition Yachts
Although interior details have not yet been revealed, the yacht is expected to feature full superyacht-standard accommodation and amenities once outfitting is complete.

The project reflects a broader trend within the industry: the conversion of robust commercial vessels into high-capability expedition yachts, combining proven offshore engineering with luxury and long-range autonomy.
As L Symphony prepares to leave the shipyard, more details are expected to emerge, offering further insight into what is shaping up to be a significant addition to the global expedition yacht fleet.
